Key takeaways
- Alberta has no provincial sales tax; you pay only the 5% federal GST.
- Calgary had a 5.0% purpose-built vacancy rate in October 2025, and rents for new tenants fell year on year.
- Alberta's general minimum wage is $15 an hour.

Calgary combines a big job market, Alberta's low taxes and rents that have started to ease. That mix has made it one of the most popular destinations for skilled newcomers. Here is what the city offers, how Alberta's nominee program works, and what to know before you sign a lease.
Where the jobs are
Calgary's economy rests on a few large sectors. Each hires differently.
- Energy. Calgary hosts many oil and gas head offices. Roles range from engineers and geoscientists to accountants, data analysts and field trades. Hiring rises and falls with oil prices.
- Construction. The city has added rental and housing supply at record pace, keeping demand for electricians, carpenters, plumbers and heavy equipment operators.
- Healthcare. Nurses, licensed practical nurses and health care aides are hired by Alberta's health system and private care homes.
- Technology. Software, data and cloud roles have grown, and Alberta runs an accelerated nomination pathway for tech workers.
- Transport and logistics. Calgary is a distribution hub, so truck drivers and warehouse staff are in steady demand.
Job Bank's wage data (2023 to 2024 reference period) gives a realistic picture:
| Occupation | Low | Median | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered nurse (Calgary region) | $34.57 | $48.01 | $55.00 |
| Licensed practical nurse (Calgary region) | $27.25 | $33.00 | $36.00 |
| Software developer (Calgary region) | $26.00 | $48.08 | $76.92 |
| Construction electrician (Calgary region) | $24.00 | $40.00 | $46.00 |
| Truck driver (Calgary region) | $21.00 | $30.00 | $42.31 |
All figures are hourly, in Canadian dollars. Nursing and electrical work are regulated, so you must be licensed in Alberta before you can work in those titles. Nigerian nursing and engineering credentials need assessment, and that can take months.
Minimum wage. Alberta's general minimum wage is $15 an hour. Students under 18 can be paid $13 for their first 28 hours a week during the school term.
The tax advantage
Alberta is the only province with no provincial sales tax. You pay the 5% federal GST and nothing on top. In Ontario the combined rate is 13%, and in Nova Scotia 14%.
Alberta's Budget 2026 estimated that people and businesses would pay $16.9 billion more in 2026-27 if Alberta had the same tax systems as other provinces. That comparison covers income tax, sales tax, fuel tax, health premiums and more. In practice, the same salary goes further on everyday purchases.
AAIP: Alberta's nominee program
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has eight streams. Four are for workers:
| Worker stream | Who it is for |
|---|---|
| Alberta Opportunity Stream | Temporary foreign workers already working full-time in Alberta with an Alberta job offer |
| Alberta Express Entry Stream | Candidates in IRCC's Express Entry pool that Alberta chooses to nominate |
| Tourism and Hospitality Stream | Workers with a full-time job offer in Alberta tourism or hospitality |
| Rural Renewal Stream | Workers with a job offer in a designated rural community, plus an endorsement letter |
The other four are entrepreneur streams: Rural Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur, Farm, and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur.
The Alberta Express Entry Stream is the one most relevant from Nigeria. Alberta currently selects through:
- the Dedicated Health Care Pathway, for licensed health professionals with an Alberta health job offer
- the Accelerated Tech Pathway, for eligible tech jobs with Alberta tech employers
- the Law Enforcement Pathway, for police service roles
- priority sectors such as construction, agriculture and aviation
A nomination through Express Entry adds 600 points to your score. Alberta says its selection priorities can change without notice. Read our PNP guide and Express Entry guide for how the two systems fit together.
Getting hired from Nigeria
Most Calgary employers cannot hire you from abroad unless you already hold permission to work in Canada, or they get an LMIA or use an LMIA-exempt category. That shapes how you search.
- Rewrite your CV the Canadian way. Two pages, no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, and results rather than duties.
- Use Job Bank, the federal job site. It also publishes wage data for your occupation in Calgary, so you can check whether an offer matches the market.
- Check the employer is real. Look up the company's address, website and phone number yourself, not the ones in the offer letter.
- Start licensing early if you are a nurse, engineer, electrician or teacher. A job offer in a regulated role is worthless without the licence.
The other option is to get permanent residence through Express Entry first, then job hunt on arrival. That route avoids the employer sponsorship problem entirely, though you must show settlement funds.
Rent in Calgary
CMHC's October 2025 survey found:
- average two-bedroom rent in purpose-built apartments: $1,914
- average for new tenants signing a fresh lease: $1,836, down from $1,927 a year earlier
- vacancy rate: 5.0%, among the highest of Canada's big cities
- average two-bedroom condo rental: $2,030
Purpose-built rental supply grew 11% in 2025, the fastest in decades. CMHC reports landlords offering incentives during lease-up, such as a free month. For a newcomer, that means room to negotiate. Ask about incentives, parking and whether utilities are included before you compare prices.
Your rights as a tenant in Alberta
Alberta's Residential Tenancies Act protects you even if your lease says otherwise. The key rules:
- Deposit cap. A security deposit cannot exceed one month's rent at the start, and cannot be raised later. The landlord must place it in a trust account in Alberta within two banking days.
- Written agreement. A lease can be verbal, but get it in writing. It should name everyone living there, the rent, utilities and what the deposit can cover.
- Inspections. Move-in and move-out inspection reports are mandatory. Without them, the landlord cannot deduct damage or cleaning from your deposit.
- Deposit return. If there are no deductions, the landlord must return the full deposit plus any interest within 10 days of the tenancy ending.
- Rent increases. Only once every 365 days, never during a fixed term, and with written notice for periodic tenancies. There is no cap on the amount.
- Subletting. Allowed with the landlord's written consent, which cannot be refused without reasonable grounds.
Disputes can go to the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service or the courts.
Step by step: your first month in Calgary
- Book short-term accommodation for two to four weeks, so you can view apartments in person.
- Apply for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage at a registry agent within three months, with your work permit or PR document. Arriving from abroad, you may be covered from the day you established residency.
- Get your Social Insurance Number and open a Canadian bank account.
- View apartments, do the move-in inspection with the landlord and keep a copy of the report.
- Contact your regulator if your profession is regulated, and start any bridging steps.
- Register with a settlement agency for free job search help, resume workshops and orientation.
- Buy proper winter gear before November. Calgary winters are cold, with sudden warm chinook winds in between.

Is Calgary right for you?
Calgary suits people in energy, trades, health and tech who want strong pay and lower taxes, and who can handle long winters. Rents are easing, which helps newcomers. Compare it with other provinces in our Canada overview, and check every AAIP rule on alberta.ca before you apply, because streams and selection priorities change often.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply to the Alberta Opportunity Stream from Nigeria?
No. Alberta says the stream is for temporary foreign workers already working full-time in Alberta, with a full-time Alberta job offer and a positive LMIA or an accepted LMIA-exempt work permit.
Does Alberta nominate nurses from abroad?
The Dedicated Health Care Pathway under the Alberta Express Entry Stream is for people with an Alberta health care job offer who are licensed in an eligible profession. Licensing in Alberta comes first, so start with the regulator.
An agent wants a fee for a Calgary job offer. Is that normal?
No. Alberta states that employers and employment agencies cannot charge workers fees for a job or job offer. You can report it to Alberta Employment Standards.
How much deposit can a Calgary landlord ask for?
No more than one month's rent at the start of the tenancy. The landlord must hold it in a trust account in Alberta and cannot raise it later.
How often can my landlord raise the rent?
Once every 365 days at most, and not during a fixed-term lease. Alberta has no cap on the size of the increase, so negotiate a fixed term if you want certainty.
When does Alberta health coverage start for newcomers from abroad?
If you move from outside Canada and apply within three months, you may be covered from the date you established residency. Apply at a registry agent with your IRCC document.
